What Does Heaven Look Like? A Beautiful Description of Heaven from the Bible
When we think of Heaven, what comes to mind? Is it a place where we will be reunited with our loved ones who have passed away? Is it a place of beauty and serenity, where we will spend eternity in peace and joy? The Bible gives us a beautiful description of Heaven that answers these questions and more. So, what does Heaven look like? Let’s find out!
What is Heaven like? How Does the Bible Describe Heaven?
The Bible tells us that Heaven is a place of perfection and beauty. In Revelation 21:18, we are told that the New Jerusalem is a city “made of pure gold”. The walls are also made of “precious stones” and the city is lit up by the glory of God. This vision paints a picture of a city that is incredibly beautiful.
In addition to being incredibly beautiful, Heaven is a place where we will be reunited with our loved ones. In 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, Paul says,
“Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (NIV)
This passage speaks of our reunification with those who have passed away in Christ. It is clear from these verses that we will all be reunited together in Heaven one day. What a comforting thought!
We also know that Heaven is a place of peace and joy. In Revelation 21:4, we are told that there will be no more death or sorrow in Heaven.
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:4 (NIV)
This means that we will never have to experience the pain of losing a loved one again.
As you can see, the Bible gives us a beautiful description of Heaven. It is a place of beauty and perfection, where we will be reunited with our loved ones, and where we will experience peace and joy forever. What a wonderful place to look forward to!
What Does Jesus Say about Heaven?
In the Bible, Jesus speaks often of Heaven. One of the most popular verses is John 14:2-3, where Jesus says,
“There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.” John 14:2-3 (NLT)
In these verses, Jesus says that there is more than enough room in His Father’s home for all of His followers. He also says that He is preparing a place for them and that when everything is ready, He will come and get them so that they will always be with Him. These verses provide comfort and hope to believers, as they offer a glimpse into the eternal life that awaits those who follow Jesus. This life will be one of joy and peace, where we will live in the presence of God forever.
In Matthew 6:20, Jesus says,
“Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.” Matthew 6:20 (NLT)
This verse reminds us that the things of this world are temporary, but our treasure in Heaven will last forever.
7 Things We Will Experience in Heaven
What happens when we die? It’s a question that has been asked throughout history, and one that we still don’t have a definite answer to. However, there are a few things that the Bible says about the experience of Heaven. Here are 7 things we know about what it will be like:
1. We will be with God:
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.” Revelation 21:3 (ESV).
2. There will be no more pain or suffering:
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4 (ESV).
3. We will have new bodies:
“For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands.” 2 Corinthians 5:1 (NLT).
4. Jesus will be there:
“There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.” John 14:2-3 (NLT).
5. There will be light from God:
“The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.” Revelation 21:23 (NIV).
6. We will live forever:
“For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.” 1 Corinthians 15:22 (NIV).
7. Everyone who goes to Heaven will be happy there:
“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.‘” 1 Corinthians 2:9 (NLT).
How Do We Get to Heaven?
How do we get to Heaven? The Bible tells us that Jesus is the only way.
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 (NLT)
But how does He get us there? Jesus didn’t die and leave us a map. He ascended into Heaven and left us with a promise (John 14:2-3).
So how do we get to Heaven? We don’t. Jesus comes and gets us. And when He does, the Bible says there will be a great reunion in the sky,
“For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.” 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (NLT).
So if you want to go to Heaven, invite Jesus into your heart today. It’s His invitation, and it’s as simple as saying yes. When you do, the Bible promises He will come for you…and take you home.
What Will We Do in Heaven?
The Bible teaches us that our current life is just a preparation for eternity. Hebrews 9:27 says,
“And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” Hebrews 9:27 (NKJV)
So, what happens after we die? The Bible is clear that everyone will stand before God to give an account of their lives.
“For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.” Ecclesiastes 12:14 (NKJV)
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.” 2 Corinthians 5:10 (NKJV)
But then what? What will we do in Heaven? The Bible doesn’t give us a lot of specifics, but we can be confident that whatever we do, it will be meaningful, purposeful, and satisfying. We will be with Jesus and all the other saints, worshiping and glorifying God for all eternity. And that is enough. As Revelation 21:4 says,
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” Revelation 21:4 (NLT)
What a wonderful hope we have!
