Did Moses Go To Heaven? The Bible Answers This Burning Question
Moses was one of the most important figures in the Bible. He was a leader of the Israelites, and he played a key role in their exodus from Egypt. But what happened to Moses after his death? Did he go to Heaven? The Bible provides some clues about Moses’ afterlife. In this blog post, we will explore what the Bible says about Moses’ journey to Heaven!
Did Moses go to Heaven according to the Book of Jude?
In the book of Jude, verse 9 states that Michael the archangel, when contending with Satan over the body of Moses, did not bring against him a reviling accusation but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”
But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” Jude 9 (NIV)
This shows that at the time of his death, Moses was already in close fellowship with God and had not yet been judged. Therefore, it seems most likely that he went to Heaven when he died.
Why did Satan feel like he had a right to Moses’s body?
Since God refused Moses entry to the promised land because of disobedience, Satan may have thought he had a right to Moses’ body since it would never enter the promised land.
But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust me enough to demonstrate my holiness to the people of Israel, you will not lead them into the land I am giving them!” Numbers 20:12 (NLT)
There is also a possibility that Satan wanted to use Moses as a false idol to worship since he was such a great leader. Satan may have wanted to use Moses’ body and burial site to try and lure the Israelites away from God. The site of Moses’ burial is unknown to man, which may have been part of God’s plan to prevent this from happening.
“So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord. And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor; but no one knows his grave to this day.” Deuteronomy 34:5-6 (NKJV)
We cannot be sure of Satan’s motives, but we can be sure that he did not succeed in his plans.
The Bible is clear that at death, our spirits leave our bodies and go either to Heaven or Hell. Many verses speak of this separation, such as Ecclesiastes 12:7 which says,
“And the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” Ecclesiastes 12:7 (NIV)
We know that physical bodies remain here on earth but spirits go to either Heaven or Hell. Based on this, it seems likely that Moses’ spirit went to Heaven when he died.
Does the New Testament Gospel tells us that Moses is in Heaven?
The New Testament Gospel teaches that Moses is in Heaven. The Book of Matthew reads,
After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. Matthew 17:1-3 (NIV)
Here we see Moses and Elijah appearing with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration. This event took place after Moses’ death, so it is clear that Moses is in Heaven.
Why did Moses not enter the promised land with his people?
When Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, they journeyed to Mount Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments from God. From there, they began their wanderings in the wilderness, heading towards the Promised Land. After forty years, they reached the border of Canaan, but Moses was not permitted to enter.
Though he had led his people courageously through many challenges, God told Moses that he would not be able to set foot in the Promised Land because he had disobeyed God’s instructions. When Moses struck the Rock instead of speaking to it as God had commanded, he revealed his lack of faith and trust in God and dishonored God’s holiness. As a result, he was not allowed to enter the land that he had spent his life leading his people towards.
“This is because both of you broke faith with me in the presence of the Israelites at the waters of Meribah Kadesh in the Desert of Zin and because you did not uphold my holiness among the Israelites. Therefore, you will see the land only from a distance; you will not enter the land I am giving to the people of Israel.” Deuteronomy 32:51-52 (NIV)
How can we apply what the Bible says about Moses’ journey to Heaven, today?
The Bible tells us that we will all face death, and after we die, our spirits will go to either Heaven or Hell. This should give us comfort, knowing that even though our bodies may perish, our spirits will live on forever. It should also motivate us to live lives that are pleasing to God so that when we die, we will go to Heaven and be with Him forever.
Moses was a man who was greatly used by God, but he was not perfect. He made mistakes and disobeyed God, but even so, God still allowed him into Heaven. This should give us hope, knowing that even if we are not perfect, we can still be forgiven and have eternal life with God.
“For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.” – 2 Corinthians 5:1
